Before embarking on your next RV adventure with your family, it’s important to go through this checklist. Our main priority is to ensure your safety and enjoyment throughout the entire year.
1. Give your rig a thorough inspection: Take the time to check all fluid levels, the engine battery, lights, brakes, and wheel lugs. Don’t forget to also check the tire pressure.
2. Pay attention to your generator: Service the air cleaner, check the oil level, and ensure it can hold a full charge. Clean the connections, governor, and choke linkage.
3. Keep your refrigerator in check: Test it by operating it on gas and check if the flame burns blue. Make sure there are no obstructions in the ventilation system and inspect the knobs for any damage that could affect the thermostat reading.
4. Don’t overlook your air conditioner: Since you’ve invested in it, make sure it’s functioning properly. Check the air filters and clean the coils from any debris. Also, check the voltage at the outside panel to ensure it’s within the recommended range.
5. Take care of the interior: Turn off the water pump switch, close windows, vents, and cabinet drawers. Ensure the refrigerator door is tightly closed. Don’t forget to check the condition of your fire extinguishers.
6. Remember the essentials: Pack your prescription medicines and copies of the prescriptions, sunglasses, camera and film, stationery and stamps, address book, tire gauge, spare parts for the generator, first aid kit, pet supplies, extra toilet chemicals, and necessary maps.
- Make sure to regularly inspect the life-supporting systems in your recreational vehicle, such as water, gas, and waste disposal. Drain and flush the water system periodically, and use a baking soda solution to eliminate any stale taste. For the disposal system, simply drain as needed or contact a plumber for assistance. Keep the propane gas systems clean and check for leaks by applying a soap solution. Remember, safety first – never check for leaks with a lit match!
7. Don’t overlook the bigger picture: Make sure your RV insurance is up to date. Avoid carrying excessive cash. Double-check all reservations, suspend mail and newspaper delivery, and inform your neighbors about your return date.
8. Towing a car? Check the connections and welds thoroughly. Ensure the safety chains are securely attached.
BTW, if you are looking at a new RV for your family. Buying an RV opens up a world of new travel possibilities, exciting adventures, and a cozy home away from home. However, it can also bring about numerous challenges and unexpected costs. As a full-time RVer, and 5th wheel owner, I firmly believe that investing in an RV inspection service provides invaluable peace of mind.
While it’s enjoyable to search for the perfect RV model, floor plan, and price that suits our needs, the most crucial aspect is determining whether the asking price is justified.
A comprehensive inspection should cover all appliances, including the oven, stove, fridge, air conditioner, furnace, and water heater. It should also encompass the plumbing system, such as water lines, drain pipes, and holding tanks.
Your inspector will meticulously assess the RV’s exterior, checking for any damaged seals, cracks, axle or landing gear issues, and other hidden problems. They will also inspect the interior for signs of leaks and damage. Appliances like the refrigerator and oven will be thoroughly examined, and accessories like awnings and slideouts will be tested.
